ECo-Friendly Commitment

ECF’s ECoFriendly Commitment:

Committed to using only the most eco-friendly reclaimed wood, non-toxic paints and finishes, and all powered by 2500 solar panels.

Our Place, People and Processes

As a business, we know that sustainability is now at the forefront of many minds.  We strive to play a significant role in advancing this ethos so it was no coincidence that we chose to base our workshop and showroom in Shirley, MA, home to one of the largest renewable energy project in the State, all powered by 2530 solar panels.

The Phoenix Park solar energy system is one of the largest renewable energy projects in Massachusetts. The installation of 2,530 rooftop and ground level panels will offset the facility's electrical load by approximately 40%. In addition to the solar energy system, Phoenix Park has taken a number of additional measures in effort to “be green” with energy efficient windows, energy efficient HVAC systems, energy efficient lighting, maximum roof insulation, low flow plumbing fixtures, and waste stream recycling.

The Many Environmental Advantages of Reclaimed Wood

Reduce, reuse and recycle is a mantra that is becoming increasingly important to many of us, encompassing everything from clothing to packaging materials. From the start of the barn wood movement in 1970s East Coast America to its enduring popularity today, the benefits of using reclaimed wood are many – its beauty, strength and stability amongst others – but perhaps most attractive is its environmental appeal.

Reclaimed Wood  Helps To Reduce Deforestation

Using reclaimed wood is a tried and tested method of reducing the need for continued deforestation. The rapid march of deforestation has already had a devastating impact on many places around the world, including 80,000 acres a day in the Amazon. Due to the rapid loss of woodlands and the unique environment rainforests create; many animals, insects, plants and even indigenous communities have been disrupted, yielding  the extinction of  approximately 50,000 species every year. With depleted habitats and ecosystems slowly unable to continue to support themselves, many species have seen a startling decrease in their numbers in a short amount of time, some even pushed into extinction. Each plank of lumber that is reclaimed and reused is a step towards a more sustainable planet.  By sourcing wood from derelict barns around America, we are able to inject a new lease of life into old timber. Tapping in to this abundant source of renewable and eco-friendly materials is an easy way to help salve an ever-growing concern for sustainability of our forests.

Toxic Waste and Chemical Processes are Fewer Than With New Wood

In addition to the reduced need for deforestation, reclaimed wood does not need to go through the same chemical process and treatments that are often rendered on new wood, to make that timber pleasing to the eye. Because reclaimed wood is already naturally, and beautifully, aged and weathered we are able to reduce the toxic waste emitted into both our air and water streams, which ultimately pollutes our food sources, natural habitats, and our bodies.

In a concerted effort to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in our products and processes, all of our paints and stains are eco-friendly. Specifically we use only the highest quality milk-based paints, and water-based stains, both finishing materials that only require only water and a cloth to clean their surface, no harsh chemicals needed, protecting both the environment and your family.

Reuse and Repurpose for Wood That Looks Good And Does Good

Reusing and repurposing reclaimed wood by hand offers a natural and warm feeling that mass-produced furniture simply can’t provide. All of our furniture is built by hand, meaning no mass-produced, energy intensive processes that use non-renewable energy sources. Instead, we produce each item with an abundance of good old-fashioned manual labor, using methods tried and tested for generations. With the added benefit that it has not undergone the rigorous chemical treatment of new wood and it is not laden with chemicals that do not naturally breakdown or dissipate.

Between our eco-friendly materials, products and processes, and now with our new location powered by solar energy, we strive to deliver a fully sustainable and eco-friendly product. Our furniture is the perfect way to add a splash of green to your home or office – give us  a call to find out more.
