If you have wood furniture, water spills or glass condensation is inevitable, unfortunately often times leading to white water stains. If your furnishings are made of reclaimed wood, they’ve withstood much worse issues than some spilled water, but still, as a first line of defense against water marks from wood furniture you should make sure that you clean up the mess as soon as possible.
If you water stained wood furniture is made from particleboard or medium-density fiberboard, it may be too late, as these are lesser quality materials, so water stains on wood can happen quicker, as there is less protection as there is less finishing material standing between the water and the wood.
Preventing water stains boils down to care of your wood furniture, and also the quality finishing process of which your furniture was made. One farm table with a lower quality stain finish may display water stains quicker and easier than another farm table with a higher quality stain. For this reason when purchasing furniture you should always ask about preventative maintained, quality of product, and susceptibility of damages such as dings, scratches, dents and water stains.
If you come across a water stain on your wood furniture, there are a few different routes you can take, that may be worth a shot. As a precautionary warning I have not personally used any of these before, however I have read these solutions elsewhere and thought I would pass them on. One popular method is to put down a towel or cloth over the wet area, and press down on it with an iron – just make sure you’ve turned the steam off, or else you’ll just make the problem worse. Keep the iron on the cloth for about five seconds and check the spot. Repeat until the stain is completely gone. If the stain has been there for awhile, a few household items may be able to help you clear the mark. Believe it or not, mayonnaise can be rather effective. Rub the mayo onto the stain with a towel, and let it sit for six to twelve hours. Wipe it off, and the stain should be gone.
I would also like to make a disclaimer that this is not the maintenance and care process needed for our barn wood furniture. Our furniture is not easily susceptible to water stains, however if you do have a water mark problem on a piece of our barn wood furniture please call to discuss.
